Record Shelf Playlists

Dr. John's Record Shelf is my weekly radio program on KDWG, 90.9 FM broadcast from the University of Montana Western. My goal is to offer an eclectic mix of various styles, genres and eras, focusing primarily (but not exclusively) on music that you won't hear anywhere else on the dial (at least not in SW Montana). My co-host, Art Vandelay and I (with the assistance of station flunky Rico Muckman) also provide some additional bits to liven up the show, including Three People I Know (where I mention three people I know), The Cultural Corner (where we engage in lively banter on art, literature and poetry), Dr. John's Top Five (where we take a shot at ranking almost anything), and Record Shelf Theater (where we re-create a scene from some famous movie, play or TV show). Today's Quote

Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was one of the pre-eminent modernist painters of the 20th century. So, in the following quotation, he knows whereof he speaks:

"Art is the unceasing effort to compete with
the beauty of flowers-- and never succeeding"

I think most artists feel the same here a quote very similar from Michelangelo: The true work of art is but a shadow of the divine perfection.

I don't consider myself an artist, but I had the same insight when we were in Red Rock Canyon a couple weeks ago. It was hard not to see the raw natural beauty of the setting as the inspiration for all kinds of artists (that specific spot, or any one of a million other places). When I came across the Chagall quote, I was reminded of that revelation, and gratified to have it confirmed so clearly by so prominent a figure (though probably not so prominent as Michelangelo).
