Back in 1967, the Beatles decided to focus exclusively on recording and gave up live performances. In order to compensate for no longer being visible to their fans, they decided to experiment with short films to accompany their singles, that would keep their faces as well as their voices in the spotlight. In other words, the Beatles can be credited with inventing the modern concept of a music video (as opposed to a straight filmed performance, which of course went way back). Here's one of the first short films they did to promote their single of "Penny Lane."
