Thought for the Day

Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was a Scottish writer whose social commentary attracted a wide readership in the nineteenth century. Here's a line of his from Sartor Resartus, which offers a definition of philosophy that I can gt behind:

"We do everything by custom, even believe in it...
What is philosophy but a continual battle against
custom; an ever-renewed effort to transcend the
sphere of blind custom, and so become transcendental."
