Battle of the Bands Update

The Crickets

Another Sunday, another Dr. John's Record Shelf, and another round of Battle of the Band matchups. This week we had three contests involving six different bands: in the Northeast Bracket, no. 5 seed Steely Dan went against no. 12 the Remains and no. 4 the Turtles took on no. 13 hte New York Dolls. In the Midwest Bracket, no. 5 the Crickets met no. 12 Big Star. They were all close, with split decisions in each case.

The Remains

The Cricket, behind "Oh Boy!" advanced to the second round, knocking off "September Gurls" by Big Star. The other two contests saw upsets by the respective underdogs as "Why Do I Cry" by the Remains shocked Steely Dan and "Reelin' in the Years," while "Looking for a Kiss" by the Dolls toppled "You Showed Me" by the Turtles." Judges this week were Art Vandelay, Sara & Tom Rosiek, and myself.

New York Dolls

We've advanced to the point where we can now announce two second round pairings: The Crickets will be taking on the Shadows of Knight in the Midwest, and The Remains and New York Dolls will clash in the Northeast. Next week will mark the half-way point in Round One, which should be completed by mid-December.

If you want to see all the regional brackets in our little competition, you can find them here, here, here, and here. In earlier action, The Byrds, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Lovin' Spoonful, the Gants, the Cowsills, the Outsiders, Steppenwolf, Spirit, the Standells, Beach Boys and Shadows of Knight previously advanced to round two. The whole competition will unfold over the next few months, on my radio show, which can be heard Sunday nights at 5:00 at 90.9 fm if you happen to be in SW Montana.
