As has become my custom in recent weeks, here's a video of one of the groups who advanced last night in the Battle of the Bands competition playing out on my radio show (Dr. John's Record Shelf). Perhaps the greatest garage rock song of all time, back in the sixties, every band that climbed on stage had to know how to play "Louie Louie." The Kingsmen were far from the first to record the number, but theirs is the definitive version. The slurred lyrics (which are actually pretty innocuous) caused a bit of an uproar, even leading the FBI to begin an investigation of the record (something about obscenity corrupting the youth of the nation). Anyway, here's the song that sounds as fresh today as it did almost fifty years ago:
