After nearly nine months of hard fought competition, yesterday we crowned Creedence Clearwater Revival as the champion in our Battle of the Bands on Dr. John's Record Shelf. By a two to one margin (based on listener votes), they held off the Crickets to take the crown as best American rock and roll band for the period of 1954 to 1974. In a consolation match, the Velvet Underground also clinched third place in the tourney by besting the Doors.
We had such a good time with this as a regular feature of the program, that we're going to do another one next year-- with the goal of determining the best non-American band from teh same era. As you can imagine, there's a pretty obvious favorite, but we'll wait to see how the competition plays out. As the brackets are drawn up, I'll list them here, probably sometime in the late summer. If you want to suggest possible contenders, feel free to do so in the comments section.

I would think that Pink Floyd could give the Beatles a run if their prime were not cut in half by your time period.
Having just listened to NPR's series on "Exile on Main Street" it is also evident that survival into the 70's (the birth of arena rock'n'roll?) is a big bonus for Mick, Keith et al.
Well done, and congrats to CCR.
