We spent a few hours in Dresden, on the Monday of our trip. As mentioned yesterday, we started with a bus tour, but then ended up in the old part of the city for a walking tour. Above you see the bridge across the Elbe that leads into the older neighborhood.
I'll be honest, I don't remember what most of these buildings were-- many were government buildings or museums. Virtually all of Dresden was destroyed at the tail end of World War II, so even though these appear to be old buildings, many of them are actually refurbished or even completely rebuilt.
I was actually in Dresden a little over twenty years ago, and even then many of these "old" buildings did not exist yet. That was still in the days of East Germany, and it was only following reunification that the resources became available to once and for all rebuild the city.
There's definitely a pre-twentieth century vibe in this part of Dresden, and it seems like it attracts quite a few tourists. As I said, this was a Monday afternoon in March, kind of a cold and wet day, yet the plazas were quite crowded with sightseers.
Clearly a lot of work has been done to create the attraction, and one wonders what Dresden was like before all the destruction. It must have been an even more beautiful place than it is now.
More pictures from Dresden tomorrow.
