Battle of the Bands Update

We have our finalists in the Battle of the Bands unfolding on Dr. John's Record Shelf (my radio show). Squaring off next week for the title of greatest American Rock and Roll Band (1954-1974) are the Crickets and Creedence Clearwater Revival. This past Sunday, the Crickets knocked off the Velvet Underground, while CCR vanquished the Doors.

The Crickets moved up behind "Peggy Sue" against "White Light/White Heat" by VU, and won in a close split decision by the judges. "Who'll Stop the Rain" was the CCR tune that took down the Doors and "Touch Me." In the finale next week, each band will be represented by three songs, at least one of which will not have already made an appearance in the tourney. If you'd like to cast a vote for one group or the others, feel free to do so in the comments here (and provide a reason for your choice). Plans are already underway to repeat this exercise next year for the same period, but focusing on non-American bands-- you can probably guess who the presumptive favorites will be, but you never know what might happen. I certainly would not have predicted the two finalists this year.
