Ernie Harwell, RIP

Ernie Harwell was one of the all-time great baseball broadcasters. For years and years, he was the voice of the Detroit Tigers. Although they were never my favorite team, it was so easy on the other end of Lake Erie to pull Ernie's play-by-play in at night over WJR, that his distinctive voice came to represent as much as anyone's the grace and class and the history of the game I love. I was sorry to hear of his passing today; he was definitely one of the giants on the mike, and I'll treasure the memory of his voice almost as much as the most die-hard Tiger fans (one of whom is a very good friend). Here's a little sample for those of you who may not have had the pleasure of hearing Ernie in his prime-- which lasted pretty much the length of his career:
