A Quote for Wednesday

I found this little nugget by William Edward Hartpole Lecky worth sharing. He was a 19th Century Irish historian, and I have to say I kind of like his take on dogmatism:

"In one age the persecutor burned the heretic; in
another, he crushed him with penal laws; in a third,
he withheld from him places of emolument and dignity;
in a fourth, he subjected him to excommunication
of society. Each stage of advancing toleration
marks a stage in the decline of dogmatism and
the increase of the spirit of truth."
