Thursday's Quote of the Day

Freidrich Leopold, Baron von Hardenburg, otherwise known as the poet Novalis (1772-1801), made this interesting point on the importance of philosophy. I wish most institutions of higher education took this more seriously, instead of seeing their sole role as preparing graduates for careers.

"The service of philosophy, or speculative
culture, toward the human spirit, is to
arouse, to startle it to a life of
constant and eager conservation."
