They must've had a good time, because I remember them taking us kids to the battlefield when I was around six or seven. I mark that trip as one of the earliest events that helped launch me on my career as a historian.

We did have a lovely trip. Dad had so much fun that (though he had never taken a vacation before) he promised me when we got home that we would definitely have a real two week vacation every year after that - and so we did.
Even when there was no money - we went off and visited cousins, aunts and uncles....we knew where all the freebies were. Mom
