Thursday's Quote

John Adams was one of the founding fathers of this country, the second president (and father of the sixth); he was apparently significant enough to warrant an HBO miniseries as well (not that we should really put much stock in that, though I understand it was very well done). Here's something he said which seems relevant to the imminent start of another school year:

"I must study politics and war that my sons may
have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy.
My sons ought to study mathematics and
philosophy, geography, natural history, naval
architecture, navigation, commerce, and
agriculture in order to give their children a
right to study painting, poetry, music,
architecture,
statuary, tapestry, and porcelain."
