The English statesman William Pitt the elder (1708-1778), Earl of Chatham was a prominent politician of the mid eighteenth century. Here's something he said in 1770, which is worth keeping in mind today:
"Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds
of those who possess it; and this I know, my
lords, that where law ends, tyranny begins."
