Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) was a pretty smart guy. He actually wrote a dictionary. Here's a thought expressed in an essay from
The Adventurer:
"He that never compares his notions withthose of others, readily acquiesces in his first thoughts, and very seldom discoversthe objections which may be raised againsthis opinions; he, therefore, often thinks himself in possession of truth, when he is only fondling an error long since exploded."
