Last month when filmmaker John Hughes died, I didn't post anything because, even though I like many of his films, I didn't have much to add to the numerous eulogies that popped up elsewhere. But today I stumbled across
this little essay which I found quite fascinating. It compares the trajectory of the careers of Hughes and the great Preston Sturges, who made a series of classic films in the 1940s. Ironically, they died on the same day, August 6, fifty years apart at virtually the same age. That's just the first common element addressed in the piece, and it goes on from there to recognize some other relevant shared traits. Anyway, if you are interested in film history, or a fan of either filmmaker, you ought to give it a look.
