Back in the 1930s, Popeye made the successful transition from the printed funnies to the big screen in a series of cartoons by the Max Fleischer Studios (creators of Betty Boop, among others). When I was a kid, these already old cartoons were a staple of the early morning kid shows like Rocketship Seven. Here is what was apparently the first Popeye cartoon which lays out all the conventions for his subsequent adventures (like the rivalry with Bluto for Olive Oyl's affections). Enjoy:
