Battle of the Bands Update

The Outsiders

In week three of the Battle of the Bands on Dr. John's Record Shelf, no. 9 seed The Outsiders knocked off no. 8 New Colony Six in the Midwest bracket in a minor upset, and the Cowsills, no. 8 in the Northeast, eked out a narrow victory over Blood, Sweat & Tears (9). Both were split decisions among the three judges (thanks to pal Don Fisher for serving as the third judge this week. I was the lone vote for the New Colony Six, who performed "Love You SoMuch" against "Time Won't Let Me" for the opposition, and I'm sorry to see them out of the competition, but thems the breaks.

The Cowsills

Both Art Vandelay and Don Fisher expressed some disgust at the Northeast matchup, holding their noses while naming their "favorite." Based on their reactions, it doesn't look good for the Cowsills to advance beyond the second round. You may know that the Cowsills were the real-life inspiration for the Partridge Family TV group. Their "Indian Lake" was just good enough to edge "You Make Me So Very Happy" by BS&T.

If you are a newcomer to the blog, and want to see the four regional brackets in our little competition, you can find them here, here, here, and here. In earlier action, The Byrds, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Lovin' Spoonful, and the Gants (in an upset) advanced. The whole competition will unfold over the next ten months, on my radio show, which can be heard at 90.9 fm if you happen to be in SW Montana.
