I can't say for sure that I first saw Gerald McBoing Boing on Saturday morning, but it's definitely a cartoon. In fact it was somewhat revolutionary when first released in 1950 (as I learned later), since it eschewed the lavishly detailed animation associated with Disney, MGM and Warner Brothers, with its stripped down, modernistic design. Now, I see a connection with the jazz cartoons of Gene Deitch from the same period, which I encountered in doing research on my dissertation back in the early nineties.
