Wednesday's Quote

J. William Fulbright was a Democratic Senator from Arkansas who believed strongly in engagement with the rest of the world (leading, in one example, to the creation of the Fulbright Scholarships for international study). These words come from his book The Arrogance of Power:
"In a democracy dissent is an act of faith....
To criticize one's country is to do it a service....
Criticism, in short, is more than a right;
it is an act of patriotism-- a higher form
of patriotism, I believe, than the familiar
rituals and national adulation."
