In my previous post about Al Franken and other political humorists, I made a passing reference to Pat Paulsen, who waged a comic campaign for President in 1968, largely via his recurring role on the Smothers Brothers variety show. Here's a clip of Paulson doing his thing (pre-campaign, but more-or-less in a similar vein), with a series of editorials:

Actually I remember him running for president for a number of years (20-25 times). It was always a hoot when he came out running for president.

I meant over a period of 20-25 years- not that he ran that many times =)

I think you're right-- this became kind of a running bit. '68 was the first time and the one that got all the attention, but then there was a lot of competition for the job that year (if I recall correctly, I think even Snoopy threw his aviator's helmet in to the ring). Paulsen benefited from the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour being the hot show on TV that year too.
