Here's something the poet Archibald MacLeish (1892-1982) wrote more than seventy years ago; if I hadn't told you that, you might have thought it of much more recent vintage:
"The remedy in the United States is not less liberty but real liberty-- and end to the brutal intoleranceof churchly hooligans and flag-waving corporationsand all the rest of the small but bloody despots who have made the word Americanism a synonym for coercion and legal crime"
