I was not a fan of Joan Rivers before I went to see the new documentary about her last week called
Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work. After seeing it, I'm still not a fan. I find her painfully unfunny, extremely obnoxious, and now come to discover she's also incredibly self-absorbed, self-pitying, and self-righteous. It isn't an appealing mix (at least not to my taste). I went to see this because I've been researching comedy of the fifties and sixties, and I recognize that Rivers played a role, maybe even an important role, in that scene. But, where I hoped to see some effort at placing her into the broader context of that period, what I got was her whining about being booked to gigs in places like Wisconsin where, horrors! it snows. I also found out more about her appearance on
Celebrity Apprentice than her time in
Second City (in fact, the latter isn't mentioned at all). I don't think I'm going out on a limb to suggest the the former is painfully insignificant next to the latter, but since Rivers was a "winner" on the Trump show, that's all that counts. I imagine there are people who actually like Rivers' shtick, and maybe this movie was meant for them, but I found it a colossal waste of time.
