I spent a couple hours this afternoon cruising along the north coast, visiting a couple little towns on the south shore of Lake Ontario, namely Wilson and Olcott. Back in the late nineteenth/early twentieth century, these were resort communities where folks came to beat the summer heat. Now they are fairly sleepy little villages, though they still retain some of that old appeal, even if the crowds of vacationers aren't so substantial as they once were. Above is the lighthouse in Olcott that used to sit out at the end of the pier to direct lake traffic to the docks.
There were actually a fair number of sailboats out on the lake today, as no doubt folks were trying to beat the heat onshore (93 according to the thermometer in my car).
Of course, not everyone can get out in the middle of the week, in the middle of the day, so I was able to get this nice shot of a row of sailboats still moored (is that the right word?) in the marina at Wilson.
This is the view of the coastline just east of Wilson-Tuscarora State Park. Despite the heat, it was a good day to get out and explore a bit.
