Words of Wisdom

After mentioning Tuli Kupferberg yesterday and Jack Kerouac a few days ago, I thought it was time to post some good words from Allen Ginsberg, who more than anyone kept the Beat spirit alive well past its fifties heyday. I saw him give a poetry reading some years back at the University of Buffalo, and he was quite the engaging performer, augmenting his words with some simple tunes played on a harmonium. Anyway, here's something he once said that I think is rather profound:

“Poetry is not an expression of the party line.
It's that time of night, lying in bed, thinking
what you really think, making the private
world public, that's what the poet does.”
