I learned everything there was to know about beatniks by watching Maynard G. Krebs on The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis when I was a kid. In playing Maynard, Bob Denver honed the comedy chops necessary to go on to play the immortal Gilligan; but to my mind Maynard was the more inspired creation. Who needs Kerouac or Ginsberg when there's Maynard? This little snippet pretty much sums up what maynard was all about:

So when did you watch Dobie Gillis? The show ran 59-63 and I never remember you staying inside to watch tv anytime in the 60's? Were there other times it was shown in reruns? I always remember you just reading your Sporting News or those history books we got from (was it?) National Geographic? Or just out with Curtis and friends building forts, digging holes, playing ball... So when did you watch this when you were a kid?????

Lil Sis,
I watched Dobie Gillis all the time (well, whenever it was on)! I remember Zelda and the Thinker statue in front of which Dobie always ruminated on his love life and his dad's grocery store. For some reason I recall it being on Saturdays, but I could be wrong. You'd be surprised how many shows I remember from that era: Hazel, Checkmate, The Rifleman, Spin & Marty, O.K. Crackerby, Donna Reed, Time Tunnel, My Mother the Car... the list goes on and on. Admittedly, some of these I also saw later in syndication (including Dobie) but I definitely remember mimicking Maynard with my friends from a very early age. Sporting News and American Heritage (not National Geographic) came later.

I'm with Liz on this one - I never thought I allowed you children to watch anything but Romper Room and Captain Kangaroo or Kukla, Fran, and Ollie, or certainly the Micky Mouse Club. Of course, I wasn't there all the time and your Dad was a dedicated TV watcher.
Yeah, and as I recall Dad was a Dobie Gillis fan too!
Dr. John
I remember Dad watching things like Hogan's Heros, Lost in Space, Dick Van Dyke, Bananza, 60 Min (actually alot of news), Carol Burnett, Red Skelton, anything with John Wayne, later even MASH and All in the Family... None of what you list ;) He seemed to be always working in the 60-70's
