Here's my last set of photos from day 1 of my trip to Berlin, Dresden and Prague. These were all taken in and around Alexanderplatz, where we were waiting to meet up with our guide before heading to supper. Above is the fountain at the west end of the plaza, behind which you see what I believe is the oldest church in Berlin.
This is most of the group we were traveling with, students in my friend Bill's Honors Seminar on Eastern European culture. It looks like Ben is being ostracized off to the left, but the gap is only there because I got up to take the picture. In fact, he got along real well with the college students despite the age gap.
Here's a view of the east side of the plaza at the base of the tower (a picture of which I posted yesterday). You can tell it's a more modernistic setting than the other side.
Above you see the skate park in the plaza, with a variety of boxes, planks and ramps which could be rearranged by the skateboarders (who were kind of inactive this particular afternoon).
Last, a couple of different views of the statuary around the fountain, celebrating Neptune (or whoever his Germanic counterpart is). There were a lot of people hanging around and snapping pictures-- our guide Ivan told us it was the first nice day in a long time, so the tourists were out in force, and the Berliners came out to check out the tourists.
Tomorrow I'll have some shots from day two of our visit.
