Last night on Dr. John's Record Shelf (my radio show) we picked up where we left off with our ongoing Battle of the Bands to determine the top American rock band of the 1954 to 1974 era. The Byrds (seeded no. 1 in the Southwest Bracket) dispatched the underdog Bobby Fuller Four (12) in a 3-0 vote (judges were Art Vandelay, Don Fisher and Sean Eudaily); and the Doors (3) scored a split decision upset over the Beach Boys (2). So the Byrds and Doors will square off in the Southwest Bracket final.
Songs in competition included "Eight Miles High" by the Byrds, "Let Her Dance" by the Bobby Fuller Four, "L.A. Woman" by the Doors, and "I'll Get Around" by the Beach Boys. Next week, we'll determine the Northeast Bracket finalists. In the Northwest, Creedence Clearwater Revival will face Jefferson Airplane; while the Crickets and Rock'n'Roll Trio will face off for the Midwest crown.
If you happen to be in SW Montana next Sunday evening, 5-7 PM, check out the program at 90.9 FM.
