Perhaps it is natural, since I'm just back from Los Angeles, to be thinking about Raymond Chandler, whose novels implanted an idea of that city in my imagination long before I ever visited. I have to admit that it doesn't quite live up to the that imaginary image, but it comes pretty close (and considering that Chandler's L.A. is over fifty years old, then that in itself is kind of remarkable). Anyway, here's a quote from Chandler that kind of fits in with some of the others recently shared here on the nature of art:
"Without magic, there is no art. Without art, there is no idealism.
Without idealism, there is no integrity.
Without integrity, there is nothing but production."
