Here's a scene from one of my favorite comedies from the 1930s-- Howard Hawks' Bringing Up Baby. If you've never seen this film, which starred Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn, keep your eyes peeled on Turner Classic Movies schedule, as it pops up there pretty regularly. Apparently this movie was a bust when it was first released, and the only explanation I can imagine is that it was just too off-the-wall, but then that was the decade of the Marx Brothers, so that doesn't really make much sense. If anyone has an idea for why this didn't immediately click (though in the long-term it certainly did), I'd be interested in hearing your theory. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this little taste:
