Quote of the Day

Among other things, James Madison is known as the father of the Constitution, for his efforts to bring together the disparate elements of the young nation to create something lasting and sufficient to stand up to the promise of union. Here's a quote that reflects part of his thinking on that matter:

"It is of great importance in a republic not only
to guard the society against the oppression of
its rulers, but to guard one part of the society
against the injustice of the other part. If men
were angels, no government would be necessary."
