Thought for the Day

There are aspects of William Graham Sumner's philosophy that I would disagree with (especially in relation to his support for the notion of Social Darwinism), but on this point I think he makes a lot of sense:

"If you want war, nourish a doctrine. Doctrines
are the most frightful tyrants to which men
ever are subject, because doctrines get inside
a man's reason and betray him against himself.
Civilized men have done their fiercest fighting
for doctrines."
