It was sad to hear of Alex Chilton's passing a couple days ago-- he was one of the most respected and influential (though largely ignored-by-the-masses) performers of his generation, especially with his band Big Star. Here's perhaps their most famous song, live with Alex singing lead from just a few years ago (after the band reformed after a long, long absence). If you like this song, you should definitely check out the rest of his catalog:

Dr John,
It is always sad to loose those who influence who and what we become... which leads me to wonder why no mention of the passing of a legend that I am sure meant a lot to you... Fess Parker - First Davy Crockett then Daniel Boone- Always thought he was big part of your growing up.

Lil Sis,
Yes that's true, but I don't know what else to say. To be honest, the news of Parker's passing didn't really register as tragic or surprising, since he was pretty old and out of sight for pretty much the last forty years. Alex Chilton was performing and giving interviews right up to the end, and a box set of Big Star material was released just a few months ago, so his loss was felt more immediately by me.
Dr. John
Dr John,
Yes even if he wasn't a "contemporary" and his passing was "not surprising" it is still a passing of a childhood hero - it surprises me that it means so little =(
