In Round Three action last night, the Jefferson Airplane and Rock'n Roll Trio won their matchups and will move on to face Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Crickets respectively. The Airplane (seeded no. 3 in the Northwest Bracket) knocked off the Standells (15) while the Trio (11) took care of the Gants (15) in a Midwest Bracket contest.
The songs in competition on last night's program were "Good Shepherd" by the Airplane, "Barracuda" by the Standells, "Rock Therapy" by the Trio, and "I'm a Snake" by the Gants. The results mean that both of the remaining longest shots have been eliminated (both the Gants and Standells were seeded 15 in their bracket); also, the only remaining groups who were active in the fifties will be going head to head in Round Four, insuring at least one making it to the semifinals and playing outside their bracket.
The remaining matches in Round Three won't occur for a few weeks, as Dr. John's Record Shelf goes on hiatus while I do a bit of traveling. But we're still on track to wrap up the competition by the end of May, as originally planned.
