Patti Smith is, rightly, best known for her own compositions, but she sure has a way with a cover. I guess this doesn't exactly qualify, as Bruce Springsteen reportedly wrote it specifically for her. Though not her best performance (as good as it is), it was by far her biggest hit. Check it out:
