Wednesday's Quotation

Why is it that non-political figures often have the clearest idea of how politics are supposed to be conducted? Here's a line from the critic and bon vivant Alexander Woollcott (1887-1943) that exactly nails the the core problem of our system:

"I'm tired of hearing it said that democracy
doesn't work. Of course it doesn't work.
We are supposed to work it."
