Most of the cartoons I watched as a kid had "stars;" that is, recurring characters who were the primary attractions (Bugs Bunny, Huckleberry Hound, etc.), But there were also a bunch of 'toons that were stand-alone shorts. Some of the best were the Modern Madcaps and Noveltoons from Paramount Studios, memorable in part for their music, including the sing-a-longs like the one here ("Big Rock Candy Mountain"):

This song has really been sanitized since the original version was released. I never knew cigarette trees and alcohol streams were part of the lyrics. Our view of childhood (and what is and is not appropriate) sure has changed.
