Kicking Off the Battle of the Bands II

Sweet

Last night we had the season 11 premiere of Dr. John's Record Shelf, my radio show on KDWG Dillon (90.9 FM if you happen to be in SW Montana). LAst year, we played out a Battle of the Bands to determine the greatest American rock and roll group from the 1954-1974 era, and this year we're following that up with another competition to determine the greatest British (or Commonwealth) group from teh same period. You can find the brackets here, here, here, and here (if you'd like to vote on any or all of the contests listed, just leave a comment here with your selections).

The Who

So, in our first matchups this season, we saw the Who (no. 1 seed in the Mod Bracket) rout Hawkwind (16), while Sweet (9) scored a mild, and close upset over Procol Harum (8) in the same bracket-- meaning that the Who will face Sweet in Round 2 next Spring. The songs that propelled these two groups to victory were "I Can See for Miles" (which bested "Cymbaline" by a 8 to 1 margin) and "Little Willy" (which narrowly beat "Conquistador" by a 6-4 count). Unlike last year, we'll be offering up an actual bracket each week, meaning that the two winners will face each other in the next round. We will, however, be rotating around the full brackets from week to week. So stay tuned on KDWG, or here, to find out who emerges as the greatest British rock band of the golden age!
