The Last Concert I Saw

As mentioned ysesterday here, I went up to see the Sadies last night at Artpark (along the Niagara Gorge). It was a free show, and I anticipated a huge crowd, but was surprised that only a couple hundred folks turned out for the show. Thankfully, the bands (another Canadian group called the Joys opened) seemed undeterred by the low turnout, and both provided energetic and polished sets.

The Sadies, led by the Good brothers (that's Travis above, Dallas was on the other guitar) offered an eclectic mix of country, surf, and garage rock that would be familiar to anyone who's heard their albums. It was pretty incredible how seamlessly they merged the different styles in constructing a truly fun evening of rock & roll.

Dallas Good served as MC, adopting a somewhat stilted but ingratiating manner in addressing the crown between songs, always starting with a "Thank you very much" for the applause following the previous number. For the encore, he came out and matter-of-factly announced they were going to play four more songs, after the first of which he promised five more, which the band proceeded to deliver, finishing up with a rollicking classic garage rock medley framed by a killer rendition of "Gloria."

The opening act, the Joys from London, Ontario, really impressed me as well, so much so that I picked up their last cd at the merch table before their set was over. It's always great to hear a familiar band hitting on all cylinders, but it's a special kick to discover something new at a show. I think it's safe to say they'll be getting a few spins on my radio show when I get back to Montana next week (the Sadies have been semi-regulars on the playlist for several years now).
