Joseph Campbell (1904-1987) wrote what is widely considered the definitive analysis of mythology in his The Hero With a Thousand Faces. Here's a quote that gives some indication of the thought he has invested in the topic:

"Every religion is true one way or another.
It is true when understood metaphorically.
But when it gets stuck in its own metaphors,
interpreting them as facts, then you are in trouble."
