Last night we started the second round of the Battle of the Bands II on Dr. John's Record Shelf. You'll recall that our goal is to determine the greatest British (or Commonwealth) group of the era 1960 to 1974. We started out with 64 bands divided into four brackets, and now we begin to whittle the field down to sixteen. This week's match-ups involved the Who (seeded no. 1 in the Mod Bracket) who defeated Sweet (9) by a 9-1 score, and the Moody Blues (5) knocking off the Tremeloes (13) by a 6-4 margin. This means that the Who will face the Moody Blues in a fairly heavyweight Round 3 contest.
The Moody Blues
The songs played included "My Generation" by the Who, "Co-Co" by Sweet, "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band" by the Moody Blues, and "Silence is Golden" by the Tremeloes. Next week will see the Rolling Stones take on Mott the Hoople and Free versus Manfred Mann. You can see the full slate of Round Two pairings, including the selected songs, here. Feel free to post in comments your votes on any of these contests. And, if you happen to be in SW Montana, you can tune in to Dr. John's Record Shelf on Sunday evenings at 5:00 pm over KDWG, 90.9 fm.
