Here are three Sunday strips from 1936 of the Billy DeBeck classic, Barney Google (with the goo goo googly eyes). In fact these particular editions of the comic appeared as the title character was being eased out in favor of hillbilly Snuffy Smith and his family.
By the time I was a kid and reading the strip regularly, you never saw Barney at all (by that time Fred Lasswell was the artist). But I've read that in the twenties, he was quite the pop culture icon, with hit songs written about him, and the entire nation cheering his racehorse Sparkplug on to victory. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this little sample of the classic strip.
