Back when I was a kid, both of the local Sunday papers augmented the regular Sunday strips with some panel cartoons. In the Buffalo News, it was George Lichty's Grin and Bear It. I found these examples of that same feature from back in 1938, so he clearly did this for a long time. In fact the nature of the jokes seem very familiar, suggesting that once Lichty had identified some core themes, he ran with them for several decades.
