Winsor McCay was one of the earliest masters of the comic strip medium, and an incredibly imaginative illustrator as well. Later he was a pioneer of animation on film. His most famous creation was undoubtedly Little Nemo in Slumberland, a full page color Sunday strip depicting the dream world of the titular Nemo. Here are three great examples of that strip-- and be sure to click on the images to see them in much larger dimensions, in order to fully appreciate the fine detail work.
Late note: apparently Blogspot (the host of this blog) has changed the way they do images-- clicking on them no longer enlarges them for easier viewing. Sorry about that. You likely won't be able to read these strips (the lettering is illegible at this size), but hopefully you can still get a good sense of its artistic qualities.
