As much as anything else, this is the sound of the eighties to me. The True Believers released only one album back then, but it represented a rootsier style that I found much more engaging than the new wave and hair metal stuff that dominated MTV. This was one of the best songs off that album (and by the way, Alejandro Escovedo-- one of the main men in the True Believers-- continues to make great music, so you might check him out too):
