The following is likely an idea that every historian has come to realize, but few have expressed it as well as Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-1859):
"Those who compare the age in which their lothas fallen with a golden age which exists only inimagination, may talk of degeneracy and decay; but no man who is correctly informed as to thepast, will be disposed to take a morose ordesponding view of the present."
