Battle of the Bands Update

Big Brother & the Holding Company

In this week's Battle of the Bands on Dr. John's Record Shelf, we had what I think is a first: two unanimous decisions, with both mild upsets. Big Brother and the Holding Company (seeded no. 9 in the Northwest Bracket), behind the mighty pipes of Janis Joplin, knocked off the Beau Brummels (8); and the Doobie Brothers (9 in the Southwest) took down the Grass Roots (8). Guest judges, joining Art Vandalay and myself this week were Don Fisher and Natalie Rosiek.

The Doobie Brothers

The winning songs were "Piece of My Heart" by Big Brother and "Black Water" by the Doobies. The Grass Roots' "Temptatiion Eyes" and "Laugh Laugh" by the Brummels were vanquished. I think it's safe to say that, based on judges comments, Big Brother will be a formidable opponent going forward, somewhat belying their middling seeding (though of course, different songs will represent them in subsequent rounds).

With five weeks left in Round 1 of our competition, we're getting close to knowing all of the Round Two matchups. So far, we know that The Byrds will be taking on the Doobie Brothers, the Sir Douglas Quintet goes against the Beach Boys, Creedence Clearwater Revival faces Big Brother & the Holding Company, and the Kingsmen will battle the Standells. Also, Chicago faces the Outsiders, the Crickets take on the Shadows of Knight, the Velvet Underground meets the Cowsills (talk about a mismatch!), and the Remains tangle with the New York Dolls. Other groups that have advanced (though their second round opponents remain to be determined) include the Lovin' Spoonful, the Gants, Steppenwolf, Spirit, the Electric Prunes, and the Bobby Fuller Four. The whole competition will continue to unfold over the next few months on my radio show, which can be heard Sunday nights at 5:00 at 90.9 fm if you happen to be in SW Montana (at 90.9 fm).
