Wednesday's Words

The novelist Edith Wharton wrote this in 1919, and it sadly remains something of a valid question today:

"How much longer are we going to think it necessary to be 'American' before (or in contradistinction to) being cultivated, being enlightened, being humane, & having the same intellectual discipline as other civilized countries?"

Right!! but today, what civilized country has the intellectual discipline to be either enlightened or humane ???
