Battle of the Bands Update

The Beach Boys

Round Two of the Battle of the Bands on Dr. John's Record Shelf continued last night, and once again we saw the favorites advance. Almost half of the Round One matchups resulted in upsets, but with half of the second round completed, there has only been one upset so far. Last night, the Beach Boys (seeded no. 2 in the Southwest Bracket) took down the Sir Douglas Quintet (10), while the Doors (3) knocked off Spirit (11). Each was a split decision, 2-1 with yours truly voting in the minority against Art Vandalay and guest judge Don Fisher.

The Doors

The songs this week included "Love Her Madly" by the Doors vs. "Mr. Skin" by Spirit, and "California Girls" by the Beach Boys against "At the Crossroads" by SDQ. So in Round Three, we'll have the heavyweight bout between the Doors and Beach Boys. The other Round Three contests already determined include Three Dog Night vs. the Lovin' Spoonful in the Northeast Bracket; Creedence Clearwater Revival vs Country Joe and the Fish (the only Round Two upset winner so far) in the Northwest; and Chicago vs. the Crickets in the Midwest. Barring any interruptions, Round Three will commence around the first week of March.
