Heading in to see
Avatar last week, it dawned on me that I had never seen a good 3-D movie. After the movie, I realized I still had never seen a good 3-D movie (for that matter, I don't think I've ever seen a James Cameron movie that I particularly liked, though I'd concede a certain amount of technical expertise). For all the hype this movie is getting, and the business that comes along with it, this is a really mediocre film just gussied up with special effects, which, by the end of the film, left my eyes really really tired. Maybe I'm just turning into an old fogey (my nephew Ben liked it considerably more than I did), but I prefer a movie that has some internal consistency in building on its themes, a movie that does not have to resort to over-the-top violence that replicates stupid video game graphics, a movie that can deal with legitimate adult subjects without resorting to mundane cliches. I can appreciate and accept that not every movie is meant for the likes of me. But this one has been promoted as "revolutionizing" movies and as a film buff of longstanding I truly hope that's merely some press agent's hoopla, because if this kind of thing is the future of movies, I think we're going to end up regretting it.

I just saw this in Digital 3D - Imax (NYC), and was amazed at how Shrek had lost so much weight ... he looks GREAT! ...and, he got to boff that blue chick from the x-men ... cool.
